PU Leatherette Safety Information
PU leather, short for polyurethane leather, is an artificial leather made by coating a backing material like polyester with a layer of polyurethane. Our Laserable Leatherette is composed of polyurethane (50%), polyester and cotton (20%), wood powder (10%), toner (5%), and other chemicals.
When laser cutting this material, it's important to follow proper safety precautions to protect yourself and others. The material can release harmful and irritating fumes when processed, however, unlike PVC-based materials, it contains no PVC and therefore does not produce cyanide gas when cut.
Ventilation and Air Filtration
Always use a laser cutter equipped with proper ventilation and fume extraction. The exhaust should vent outdoors and away from occupied areas. Ensure your work area has good general ventilation, avoiding breathing vapors and maintaining well-ventilated working conditions. A NIOSH-approved respirator with organic vapor cartridges is recommended for industrial applications. Under normal hobbyist use, respiratory protection may not be required, but it is always a good precaution.
Personal Protection
Protective gloves (nitrile or butyl rubber) are recommended. The material may cause allergic skin reactions and serious eye irritation.
Laser Cutter Safety
Never leave a laser cutter unattended during operation. Keep the cutting bed clean to prevent fires from debris, and have a CO₂ extinguisher, chemical powder, or water spray nearby, full-jet water is not recommended. Regularly clean and maintain your laser cutter's exhaust and filtration system.
Storage and Handling
Store in a cool, well-ventilated place away from high temperatures, open flames, strong acids, and oxidizing agents.
