Beginner Leatherette: No Stitch Personalized Backpack Tag + All Free Design Files Provided

Updated Apr 2026

Just two clean cuts, a bond, and a keychain that outlasts anything you'd find in a gift shop!

Why Leatherette?

PU leatherette is one of the best-kept secrets in the laser crafting world. It cuts clean, engraves with incredible detail, comes in hundreds of colours and textures, denim, carbon fiber, metallic, holographic, suede, and it doesn't fray, crack, or absorb moisture like real leather. A finished leatherette keychain feels premium in the hand and holds up to daily abuse on keys, bags, and belt loops for years.

The no-stitch double-layer method takes that durability even further. Instead of a single thin piece with a punched hole, you're fusing two layers back-to-back. The result is a rigid, sandwich-style tag that won't bend, split, or delaminate!

Materials
  • Leatherette sheet: Shop Our PU leatherette, we have so many colours! Perfect thickness is 0.8 mm to 1.2 mm thick. One sheet goes a long way; a single 12"×18" sheet yields 20–30 keychains depending on size. You can pick one with pre-applied adhesive and another without!
  • You can buy leatherette without adhesive and use leatherette glue, flexible, waterproof, no heat needed.
  • Keyring hardware: Snap Clips, standard split rings (20–25 mm), lobster clasps, etc!
Tools
- Laser cutter: CO₂ or diode with at least 5W optical; 40W+ recommended for clean cuts
- Iron or heat press: only if using heat-activated adhesive film

Step 1.  Create Your Design

Design your unique keychain in software of your choice, we will use free for commemrcial use mylasertools.com because it's free and convinient!

Note that you will need 2 pieces of "backplate cut, the "back side" should be mirror flipped before cutting.

Step 2. Cut Two Pieces

Send the file to your laser and cut two pieces from your leatherette sheet.
  • Piece 1 (front): Run the full job, cut outline + engrave your design
  • Piece 2 (back): Run cut only, no engraving, but flipped

Always run a test on scrap first, leatherette varies by brand and backing type.

Step 3. Flip and Bond

This is where the magic happens.

  • Align the pieces exactly, the edges should match perfectly since they're from the same cut file
  • Press firmly all over with a brayer or the flat of your hand, paying attention to the edges and around the keyring hole
  • Allow to cure (contact cement: 5–10 minutes; heat bond: ready immediately; tape: ready immediately)

Step 4. Attach the Hardware

Thread your split ring or snap clip vthrough the keyring hole.

That's it. Your keychain is done.

Colour Combinations to Try

Leatherette comes in enough variety that the colour pairing is half the fun. Some combinations that work especially well:
  • Black carbon fiber / Gold metallic  for  Industrial luxury
  • White smooth / Rose gold metallic for  Wedding / bridal favour
  • Navy smooth / Caramel tan for Classic nautical
  • Holographic silver / Black smooth for  Statement piece
  • Blush pink / Cream white for Clean and minimal
  • Denim texture / Black smooth for Casual everyday

Because the back is always clean and smooth, even a single-colour build looks finished and intentional.
