Beginner Leatherette: No Stitch Foldable Bookmarks + All Free Design Files Provided

Project Essentials: The "No-Stitch" Bookmark Kit

What to get from the store (Your Project Set):

Tools you will need at home:

  • Laser Cutter or Manual Tools: Use a CO2 or Diode laser for precise engraving and intricate cuts.
    • Alternative: If you don't have a laser, this material can be easily cut with sharp scissors or a craft knife. You can customize the surface using vinyl instead of engraving.
  • Heat Press or Household Iron: Set to medium heat (approx. 275°F – 300°F or 135°C – 150°C). This activates the adhesive backing for a permanent bond.
    • Alternative: If you prefer a different look, these can be sewn together using a leather needle or even left unglued for a "sleeve" style bookmark.
    • Alternative: User whatever glue you have that will work for cotton/felt like material!
  • Parchment Paper or Teflon Sheet: Crucial for protecting the leatherette surface from direct heat and preventing any melting or unwanted shine.
  • Damp Microfiber Cloth: For wiping away soot or "char" from the edges and body after laser cutting and engraving to keep your project clean.

Design Options and Tools

You have several paths to a finished product depending on your style and software preference:

  • The Custom Generator: Use our specialized leatherette bookmark generator we did in YXE Creation Craft Hub for this project to create instant, perfectly scaled designs. This tool allows you to customize dimensions and hole placement without needing external design software.
  • Standard Software: If you prefer total control, you can build your files from scratch in programs like Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, or any other software of your choice

A Quick Technical Note on Materials

When you move from the design screen to the laser bed, remember that "leatherette" is typically a laser-safe synthetic. However, always verify that your material is PVC-free. Laser-cutting PVC releases hydrogen chloride gas, which is highly corrosive to your machine's mirrors and harmful to your health. Most high-quality laserable leatherettes are made of polyurethane (PU), which cuts cleanly and produces a dark, high-contrast engrave. In our store we store only PVC-free leatherette, that we have safety documentation from manufacturer and tested every batch in our studio first!

Step 2: Laser Cutting & Engraving

Place your leatherette sheet in the laser.

  • Engraving: If you are adding a name or quote, engrave this first.
  • Cutting: Use your "Cut" settings. The heat-melt adhesive backing cuts easily, but ensure you have enough power to get through the backing and adhesive layer cleanly and good exhaust.
  • Cleaning: Once the pieces are out of the machine, use a damp microfiber cloth to gently wipe away any soot from the edges or the engraved area.

Step 3: The "Taco" Fold or Double-Layer Alignment

  • For a Double-Sided "Wrap Around Page" Magnet Bookmark: Take your two identical pieces and place them with the adhesive sides touching (back-to-back). Align the tassel holes perfectly. Put magnets on both ends, and snsure magnets are attreacting to each other to "close" the bookmark.
  • For a Folded Bookmark: If you designed a simple foldable style, fold the material so the adhesive is on the inside. Place your tassel in the fold

Step 4: Heat Bonding

This is where the magic happens.

  • Place your aligned bookmark on the bottom plate of your heat press.
  • Cover it with a sheet of parchment paper or a Teflon sheet to protect the "grain" of the leatherette from melting or becoming too shiny.
  • Press for 10–15 seconds at 365 F.
  • Important: Let it cool completely before moving it. The adhesive needs to "set" as it cools to create a permanent bond.

Inspiration: Do you know we have engravable sublimatable leatherette. You can sublimate your design while heat bonding as well!

Step 5: Finishing touches

If you prepare your bookmark for a craft fair you can cut a great bookmark holder from paper.

  • Pick your favourite cardstock, you can print your design on it
  • Cut a shape enough to fit your leathertte and two lines, I have a ready free design for you as well!
  • Attach tassel to bookmark or to the sleeve!
