3M Double-Sided Adhesive for Laser Cutting: Which One Should You Choose?

Best for: textured wood, rough-surface acrylic, prefinished plywood, acrylic letters mounted to walls, any substrate where surface imperfections need bridging.

The 3M 468MP shares its adhesive chemistry with the 467MP, the same trusted 3M 200MP acrylic PSA, but at more than double the thickness: 0.13 mm (5.2 mil). That extra adhesive mass flows into surface irregularities under hand pressure, maximizing contact area where the 467MP's thin film would bridge over voids. The result is 84 oz/in peel strength on aluminum, 31% stronger than 467MP.

Why it matters for laser crafts:
Sign shop users report 12-year track records mounting laser-cut acrylic letters to painted drywall with this tape. When you're assembling double-layer signs from 6mm acrylic, layered wood ornaments, or backed panels that will hang on walls or take regular handling, the 468MP gives you margin. It's distinctly gummy and aggressive in hand, which is the point, but position carefully before pressing. This bond is permanent. There is no repositioning window once you press.

Like the 467MP, the liner is laser-safe. Apply to your sheet before cutting, run the laser, peel the liner on the finished piece.

Technical specs:

  • Adhesive: 3M 200MP high-performance acrylic PSA
  • Adhesive thickness: 0.13 mm (5.2 mil)
  • Liner: 58 lb polycoated paper (laser-safe, won't burn)
  • Peel strength (Al, 90°): 84 oz/in
  • Temperature range: -35°C to 149°C (continuous), 204°C (short-term)
  • Sheet size: 12" × 20"

Applications: prefinished plywood laser signs, textured or cast acrylic, layered wood ornaments and frames, acrylic letters on painted walls, any assembly requiring maximum durability over thin aesthetics. For exterior or high-stress outdoor applications, VHB is the right call, thermal cycling will delaminate any transfer tape used full-coverage on exterior acrylic.

Adhesive FAQ

Using 3M adhesive tape

  • What can I bond with this 3M adhesive tape?

It is a double-sided adhesive transfer tape for mounting laser-cut and engraved pieces, bonding acrylic, wood and leatherette to fabric, apparel, signage and hard surfaces for a clean, permanent hold with no sewing or messy glue. It comes in a few grades: 300LSE is the most versatile and grips the widest range of surfaces, including low-surface-energy plastics, while 467MP and 468MP are tuned for metals and high-energy plastics.

  • How do I apply it?

Apply the tape to the back of your material first and press it down firmly, it is pressure-activated, so firm, even pressure is what builds the bond. Then cut your piece, the liner is laser-safe and cuts cleanly along with the material. When you are ready to mount, peel the liner and press firmly onto your surface.

  • Which 3M adhesive should I choose?

It depends on the surface and the wear it will see. Our guide, 3M Double-Sided Adhesive for Laser Cutting: Which One Should You Choose, walks through the options so you can match the tape to your project.

  • Do I need this if my leatherette already has TPU adhesive?

Not for press-on leatherette patches, those already carry a heat-activated TPU melt backing. Reach for this tape when you are mounting acrylic, wood, or sheets without adhesive, or when you want a no-heat option.
