Engravable Acrylic FAQ

Choosing your engravable acrylic

What laser crafters ask before ordering two-tone and three-tone sheets.

  • What is engravable two-tone acrylic?

Two-tone acrylic is a laserable sheet with a thin coloured top layer over a contrasting core. When you laser engrave the surface, the top layer is removed and the core colour shows through, giving crisp, high-contrast text and artwork without paint fill or masking. It is the go-to material for nameplates, door signs, labels, awards and name badges.

  • What is the difference between two-tone and three-tone acrylic?

Two-tone has one top layer and a core, so it engraves one contrast colour. Three-tone acrylic adds a middle layer: a light engraving pass reveals the middle colour and a deeper pass reveals the core, so you can engrave two different colours on one sheet for layered logos and borders.

  • Should I choose 1.5 mm or 3 mm?

1.5 mm is thin and light, ideal for name badges, labels, tags, keychains, earrings and inlays. 3 mm (~1/8") is rigid and sturdy for door signs, wall plaques, desk nameplates and awards. Most two-tone colours come in both thicknesses at the same 12x24" sheet size.

  • What finishes are available?

Choose from bright solid colours, metallics (brushed gold, silver, chrome, copper, mirror and matte) and realistic wood grain such as oak, walnut and ebony. Each engraves to a white, black or colour core.

  • Which lasers can engrave two-tone acrylic?

Two-tone acrylic is made for CO2 and Diode lasers, which engrave the top layer cleanly and cut the sheet with a smooth edge. Only the thin top layer needs to be removed, so use a light, fast engraving pass and test on a scrap first.

  • What size are the sheets and where do you ship from?

Engravable acrylic sheets are 30x60 cm (~12x24"). Everything is in stock at our studio in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and ships across Canada.

  • My laser bed is 12x20". Will a 12x24" sheet fit?

Yes. You can cut it to size yourself in a couple of minutes: score the sheet with a utility knife along a metal ruler and snap it over the edge of a table, no laser or saw needed. You get a piece that fits your bed plus a 4" strip for keychains, earrings and test grids. Read our step-by-step guide: How to cut acrylic without a laser.
