Keychains that sell

To make laser cut keychains you need four things: a laser cutter, keychain material, hardware, and a design file. A 40W+ CO2 laser handles 3mm acrylic cleanly; a 10W+ diode laser works well on leatherette and thin wood. For materials, 3mm cast acrylic and PU leatherette are the most popular starting points. For hardware, pick up a pack of split rings, swivel snap hooks, and a few beaded wristlets or tassels. Both sell well, so pick by the look and the use. Acrylic gives vibrant colour, a rigid feel, and works for shaker keychains and layered designs; glitter and mirror acrylic are popular for sparkle. Leatherette is lightweight, will not shatter if dropped, engraves with crisp detail, and takes full-colour sublimation, which makes it ideal for bag tags and luggage tags. Many sellers offer both and let the customer choose.

3mm (1/8 inch) is the standard for acrylic keychains. It is rigid enough to survive a pocket, a bag, and a set of keys without flexing or snapping, and it cuts with a clean polished edge. Avoid 2mm for keychains: it is fine for earrings but too fragile for daily key abuse. For shaker keychains you stack two 3mm cut frames around a clear window to hold the fill.

The most common setup is a split ring (25mm is the everyday size) threaded through a hole in the design. From there you can add a swivel snap hook or lobster clasp so it clips onto a bag, a beaded wristlet for a wristlet keychain, or a tassel for a decorative finish. Buy hardware in bulk packs to keep your per-unit cost low, since the ring and clasp are often the largest part of your material cost.

Cut a 5mm hole for a standard split ring, placed about 5mm in from the edge of the design. That clearance lets the ring turn freely and leaves enough material around the hole to stop it cracking. Yes. Sublimation-ready acrylic and sublimation gloss PU leatherette both take photographic full-colour prints from a heat press at 375–400°F for 60–90 seconds. Press the sheet first, then cut the shapes, so a single press can yield many keychains. Standard cast acrylic and standard leatherette do not accept sublimation, so use sheets rated for it. Layered keychains stack two or more cut shapes in different colours or materials. Cut each layer separately, then bond them with 3M tape for a clean, permanent flat bond with no cure time. For press-fit inlays, where one piece sits inside a cutout in another, subtract 0.1–0.15mm from the inner piece on each side to account for laser kerf, giving a snug friction fit without tape. Popular combos: a glitter acrylic base with a leatherette top, or contrasting two-tone acrylic layers.

Cast acrylic at 3mm is durable for everyday carry, but it is still acrylic, so design around its weak points. Keep enough material around the ring hole, avoid long thin necks between letters that can snap, and round sharp corners where you can. To reduce surface scratches, leave the protective paper masking on until after cutting and weeding. If a customer wants the most drop-proof option, steer them to leatherette, which flexes instead of breaking.
